The STIMA Project (“Promozione
della cultura della sicurezza dei trasporti marittimi” –
Promotion of the culture of safe shipping), developed and promoted
by the City of Livorno and entrusted to Fondazione LEM (founded
by the City), works under a special agreement with the Ministry
of Infrastructure and Transportation with a view to improving
the knowledge of shipping safety issues and spreading the culture
of prevention and safe shipping and the protection of human life
and the environment.
In Livorno, shipping safety is a very deeply-felt issue
after the Moby Prince accident, and that accident raised awareness
of the fact that the culture of safety spreads and grows through
knowledge and reflection on the experiences of the past and the
search for innovation.
The STIMA Project involves study and research, the spreading
of information (also through multimedia aids) and the establishment
of an Observation Post that should become a regulatory/legal
link to raise awareness of shipping and transport of hazardous
materials and pollutants, also through a comparison and investigation
of the feasibility of using systems for detection of dangers at
sea.
More specifically, the project involves
work in the following areas:
>
courses/processes for the improvement of scientific and technical
knowledge of the industry problems;
> detection, systematisation and dissemination of relevant
information and news (through relational databanks on ports, ships,
goods, regulations and documents);
> planning and implementation of innovative systems for updating
and publishing such information and news, also through multimedia
and computer aids, shared and/or to be shared with institutions,
authorities and operators across the Mediterranean;
> classroom training through a learning centre and distance
learning through a special multimedia platform based on simulation
methods.
The WEB pages of this web site are a summary of the work performed
by all those who work at this ambitious project and an invitation
to web surfers to learn more about safety issues through the databanks,
the library, the links to many public and private bodies working
in this area; such links can also be easily found in the web pages.
We do all this because we confide and hope that web surfing
will lay the foundations for real, safe shipping.
